I was siting here today and considerting religion. There are several reasons why practicing religion is important. However, it should not be acceptable to blindly accept religious documentation without questioning it first.
I believe that religion is an alternative way to explain the mechanics of the universe. Every religion contributes to the establishment of order. "Thou shalt not murder", "Thou shalt not steal thy neighbor's cow", etc. This all contributes to the construction of order. Without religion it is easy to see that the world would be more chaotic.
However, this does not mean that every aspect of any particular religion has to be accepted. It is not essential that if you are a Christian that you accept that the world was created in seven days. If you choose not to accept particular aspects it does not mean that you are a "bad" Christian or a heathen.
